Sauk Centre, MN (December 11, 2009) – Over the past 70+ years, nobody has represented the sport of Dirt Track Racing in Central Minnesota better than Willmar, Minnesota, resident Charlie Nelson. Charlie got his start in the sport as a pit crew member for Late Model legend Darrel Hoyer. After that he performed duties on the KRA Speedway board as well as helping the track with any odd jobs needed to be done to make improvements to the Speedway. Over the past 15 years Nelson has been instrumental in helping KRA Speedway turn into the Thursday night powerhouse it has become.
Along with all the tasks Nelson has performed over the years to make racing better and more enjoyable, he also proven to be one of the finest trophy builders anywhere in the United States. Charlie first began building trophies for special events held at KRA Speedway before doing a bit more for other organizations such as the Minnesota Corn Growers Association’s “Ethanol Tour” and Madison Speedway’s Annual Jordy Martinson Memorial “back to school” special. Perhaps Nelson’s most impressive call came from the World of Outlaws, who contacted Charlie to provide a trophy for the winner of the Princeton National, a World of Outlaw Sprint Car race held at Princeton Speedway in 2007 and 2008. To this day Donny Schatz still displays his two clunk trophies at Schatz’s Truck Stop in Fargo, North Dakota. To say that Nelson has been instrumental in helping racing succeed in Central Minnesota over the past 30-40 years would be an understatement. Over the years, drivers such as Donny Schatz, Craig Thatcher, Craig Christiansen, Dave Cain, Jeff Provinzino, Jeff Tardy, Scott Lawrence and Brock Gronwold have all been fortunate enough to win a special event that garnered them a clunk trophy in the process.
Enter 2010, when the RACEMN Modified Series will kick off its inaugural season hoping to provide drivers and fans the opportunity to be a part of a touring series type of atmosphere within the friendly confines of the WISSOTA sanctioning body. Along with the generous nightly payout and series point fund for each division featured in the series, the founders of RACEMN are exploring ways to set this series apart from some of the others. On Friday, September 10, 2010, RACEMN Series Champions will be crowned in the WISSOTA Modified, WISSOTA Midwest Modified and WISSOTA Mod Four divisions. A special presentation will be held at the conclusion of the event in which the champions in each of the three divisions will be awarded a clunk trophy courtesy of Charlie Nelson. “It was important to me that the eventual champion in each division received a Charlie trophy,” stated RACEMN Series Director Ray Beste. “These are the most unique trophies we’ve ever seen and we want to support the people that support the series.”
“Ray and I have been friends for quite a few years now, and when he approached me about building the trophies for the series I couldn’t say no,” stated Nelson. “I wish Ray and his crew all the best of luck in 2010.”
On behalf of Barry Braun, Ray Beste, Tim Boeder, Nate Fischer and everyone involved with the RACEMN Modified Series we’d like to thank Charlie for coming on board for 2010. We look forward to working with the drivers, fans, pit crew members and sponsors that will make the 2010 season a success.
